Serve With Us |
|
Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. -- Matthew 25:40 As a church in the center of the city, we are constantly seeking to discern how we can most faithfully serve our neighbors - from the people who work in the buildings all around us to the individuals who sleep on the church porch at night. We regularly serve at several ministries in and around the city. In addition to serving others, we seek to provide opportunities to learn as much as we can about issues of social justice facing our city, nation and world. Building Community with Unhoused Neighbors Our congregation serves dinner at Calvary Women's Shelter (928 5th Street, NW) on the 4th Sunday of each month. Would you be willing to prepare a dish to take to the women at Calvary or help serve and eat with the women from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.? If you are willing and able to assist with bringing a dish and/or serving the meal, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . You can help our neighboring congregation, Asbury United Methodist Church (11th and K Streets NW) serve at the Neighbor-to-Neighbor Breakfast on the fourth Sunday of each month beginning at 9:00 a.m. Come help serve food, chat with neighbors, and distribute clothing. Contact Cheryl at the above email address if you are interested. Finally, blessed with the resource of having four showers as a result of our historic restoration, Mount Vernon Place opens its showers to those in need of a hot shower, food and fellowship each Tuesday and Thursday morning. Volunteers arrive on site at 6:00 a.m. and are finished by 8:30 a.m. Training is required. For more information, please contact Jenn at the above email address.
Working with Sex-trafficking Survivors Mount Vernon Place UMC is partnering with Courtney's House to help rescue young girls from modern-day slavery known as sex-trafficking. Courtney's House is the first place of its kind in the DC area where girls who are rescued from sex-trafficking are able to heal and prepare for a healthy, happy life. In response to an awareness of sex-trafficking in our immediate community, Mount Vernon Place was blessed to find the founder of Courtney's House, Tina Frundt, and develop a relationship with her and her organization. Want to volunteer to help take the clients of Courtney's House to appointments or on fun day outings or be trained to do street outreach? We will also be hosting a monthly breakfast for survivors.
