Serve in the Community

One of the best ways to get to know others and our neighborhood is to serve with us. Regular opportunities to serve are held at both Food and Friends and Calvary Women's Shelter. In addition, other opportunities are scheduled throughout the year. Please watch the Serve portion of the website for more information.

Community Groups

Cultivating authentic Christian community is one of the things we are constantly trying to do at Mount Vernon Place UMC. In the church, the words, "fine, thank you" should never be an exceptable response to the question, "How are you?" We seek to be intentional about creating a place where we can come and share whatever is happening in our lives, trusting that people will support us, encourage us, laugh with us and pray with us. One of the most formational ways in which individuals experience community is through our community groups. Organized by geography, these groups are inwardly growing, outwardly focused small groups that meet weekly for a shared meal, Bible study, fellowship, prayer and service in the city. There is currently a group meeting in Columbia Heights and another group meeting downtown. Additional groups will continue to be added as the congregation grows. If you would like to participate in a group, please contact Pastor Donna to find the group that is right for you.

Young Adults

Front Porch Friday:The front porch used to be the place where people would hang out, enabling people to get to know their neighbors and enjoy a sense of community. In Washington, the front porch can be hard to find, and finding community can be even more difficult. If you are looking to meet and connect with other young adults, please join us for Front Porch Friday on the first Friday of every month. All are welcome! You may call the church office at 202-347-9620 or email Kristine to get details on each event.

Book Club

All are welcome to join the MVP Book Club at different times during the year. The next gathering is scheduled for Monday evening, June 16, at which time we will discuss National Public Radio's Krista Tippett's new book, Speaking of Faith: Why Religion Matters- and How to Talk About It. Watch for further information on the location. If you have questions, please email Pastor Donna.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Many of God's greatest gifts to us are invisible: grace, love, forgiveness. However, these gifts can be made manifest in the actions and care of others. Through the prayer shawl ministry, we knit or crochet shawls for people who are experiencing loss, illness or other stressful times in the lives. As we knit, we pray for the recipient, contemplating God's love for us all. Once complete, each shawl is blessed through the prayers of different members of the congregation. Please contact Melogy Twigg at twiggme3@hotmail.com for more information.

Men

Men of all ages are invited to gather for coffee and conversation at 8:30 a.m. on the second and fourth Saturday of each month at the Starbucks on the corner of 7 th and H Streets in Chinatown. All are welcome! Contact Mel Kong (kongmel@hotmail.com ) for more information.

Music

Music is a central component of the worshipping life at Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church.  Different ensembles are organized throughout the year under the leadership of David Yoder, Interim Director of Music. The choir rehearses it 9:45 on Sunday mornings, and all singers are welcome!

Bible Study

A study is held on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. at the Hermitage in Northern Virginia. Please contact the church office for more information on this study.
