Our Pastor
Rev. Donna Claycomb Sokol was appointed as our pastor on July 1, 2005. She earned her undergraduate degree in economics from William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri, her Master of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina, and she is currently working on a Doctor of Ministry degree in preaching at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. Prior to responding to her call to ministry, Pastor Donna served as a White House intern in the Clinton Administration, on the staff of U.S. Representative Eric Fingerhut from Ohio, and U.S. Senator Tom Harkin from Iowa. Her other appointments include Minister of Congregational Care at First United Methodist Church in Hendersonville, N.C. and the Director of Admissions at Duke Divinity School.
Pastor Donna experienced her “second calling” away from admissions and back to the local church on a 2003 Pilgrimage of Pain and Hope in South Africa, a call that compelled her to ask God for three things: to take her out of her place of comfort and success, to give her a heart for broken and hurting people, and to make her more prophetic. The answer to this prayer was revealed when she was invited to serve as the pastor of Mount Vernon Place.
Pastor Donna has written for Pulpit Resource, and she is a regular contributor to the preaching resource, Proclaim. Her favorite things include reading, writing, traveling, spending time with friends and family, and enjoying all that Washington has to offer. Pastor Donna is married to Craig Sokol.
