Our Pastor


Rev. Donna Claycomb, was appointed pastor of Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church in July, 2005.  Donna earned an undergraduate degree in economics from William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri and holds a Master of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina.  Her previous appointments include serving as the Minister of Congregational Care and Evangelism at First United Methodist Church in Hendersonville, North Carolina, and as the Director of Admissions at Duke Divinity School.  Prior to responding to her call to ministry, Donna served on the staffs of U.S. Representative Eric Fingerhut and U.S. Senator Tom Harkin in Washington, D.C.  She is the recipient of the 2004 John Wesley Award for Preaching and is a regular contributor to the preaching resource, Proclaim

Carol is a native Washingtonian , a proud product of the Washington, D.C. Public Schools, and holds degrees from Trinity College and American University. After retiring from Verizon Communications after 36 years of service, she has been on the staff of Mt. Zion UMC in Georgetown, served as Interim Church Secretary for Asbury UMC for over a year, and currently provides support to Bishop Forrest Stith in managing the African American Methodist Heritage Center (AAMHC).

A lifelong member of Asbury UMC, Carol serves in several capacities within the ministry. She is excited about being in service at Mount Vernon Place UMC, and is happy to be here at the beginning of exciting changes to this ministry and the positive transformation that will occur in this community when the building project is completed.

Nathan Howe

Nathan is a second year student at Wesley Theological Seminary working on a Master of Divinity degree. He and his wife, Megan, are originally from northeast Ohio. They plan to return to Ohio once Nathan completes his degree at the seminary in order to begin pastoral ministry. Nathan attended college at Ohio Northern University where he earned a B.A. in Philosophy. He is an avid sports enthusiast who loves the Cleveland Browns, and he is excited about his time at Mount Vernon Place UMC, looking to be involved in all areas of the life of the congregation.

Wesley Student Intern:
Theon Johnson III

Theon is currently a first year Master of Divinity student at Wesley Theological Seminary. A native of Canton, Mississippi, Theon received a Bachelors of Science degree from Millsaps College in Philosophy and Religious Studies. During his undergraduate studies, he served the Millsaps Community as a First Year Student Orientation Leader, Member of the Multicultural Awareness Diversity Group, Student Government President, and in many additional programs and organizations. Theon served as a member of the United Methodist Student Movement Steering Committee (UMSM), a national body under the campus ministry section of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, which provides guidance to the development of the United Methodist Student Movement and assists with programmatic logistics. Theon has also served as a member of the Division on Ministries with Young People (DMYP) since 2004, a Division approved through the 2004 General Conference of the United Methodist Church geared towards developing, connecting, and empowering young people to provide vision and insight for the church. In August 2006, he was elected as one of two co-chairs for the DMYP. Besides being involved with the Global Church, Theon also served as the Musician for Canton United Methodist Church (Canton, MS) from December 1998- August 2006.
