Music & the Arts

Mount Vernon Place UMC is blessed with remarkable space for the arts including its sanctuary, chapel, music rehearsal suite, 150 seat theatre theaterand a dance studio. The church is also the home of several theatre groups who call the Undercroft Theatre their home and is the practice site of various community musical and dance groups.
Under the leadership of Rev. Jason E. Hill, the Director of Music, Worship & the Arts, the Sanctuary Choir provides musical leadership at the 11:00 a.m. worship service from September through June. The Sanctuary Choir presents an extremely diverse repertoire of music, from chant of the 16th century through contemporary pieces, music based in our Wesleyan theology to world music representing the diversity of the family of God.

The Sanctary Choir is open to all. Rehearsals are on Mondays at 6:35 p.m. and Sundays at 10:20 a.m. in the in the 3rd floor music suite in the historic building (enter through the Massachusetts Ave. red side door and take the elevator to the third floor on Mondays) Consistent weekly attendance at both of these rehearsals is important for participation in this ministry.

Instruments contribute much to our worship experience as well. Aside from MVPUMC’s historic pipe organ, Steinway & Sons piano, two full sets of handbells and hand chimes, keyboard and electronic drum set, talented church members frequently play violin, oboe, guitar, flute, harp, drums and a wide array of other instruments to help lead the congregation in the worship of God.

Also, our newly formed MVPuppet ministry is always looking for strong arms of all ages. Other opportunities constantly arise to share the rich diversity of the arts at MVPUMC.

5th SUNDAY CHOIR

In months that have 5 Sundays, join us for our 5th Sunday Choir.  There is no committment required except showing up in the Sanctuary on the 5th Sunday at 9:30 a.m. to rehearse.  This choir focuses on Gospel and Contemorary music, and no expereince is necessary. The only thing we ask is that you come to enjoy fellowship and sharing in making a joyful noise in worship!

In our worship of God, our souls are nurtured, shaped, strengthened and renewed so that we go into the world committed to loving and serving others through the love of Christ.
